Scouring many of my co-collaborator, Taiche’ beautiful and varied looks, I settled on two that captured what I saw and captured two emotions I felt during my journey to reconnect with the Chamoru culture. I saw a set of images of Gideon Lorete (aka Mana), and Starlet Cruz.
With Starlet’ one of the first details that I immediately noticed graceful beauty or her gorgeous hair, it was her expression. Her facial expression reminded me of the emotions I felt when I first began my journey of reconnecting to my cultural heritage. At the start of my journey, I felt such a strong sense of discouragement. Seeing my peers who grew up with the culture, or were dancers, singers, and in some cases practitioners, I felt no matter what I did I would always fall behind.
However, even with this daunting feeling, there was one emotion that stayed persistent, hope. A hope for the future whatever lies ahead, what can be preserved and passed down through the future generations.
The serene nature of her expression and the original image itself, I interpreted it as an assurance, being confident in what lies ahead regardless of the obstacles that are more than likely to arise against us as a cultural collective, despite it all we will persevere, adapt, and most importantly, to stay strong.
At the base of the design, with the knowledge I learned over time in part of academic research, my peers, and a big part to my mentor, I felt the Gaosali flower was the right choice. I view the flower as a symbol of hope. A flower that can thrive in stone rather than soil, conditions that most flower types are unable to live. The Gaosali flower is poetic in of itself, no matter how bleak or how hard things get, even the greatest of pressures and burdens can produce resilient beauty.
